Moving Sheep in an Adaptive Grazing System on a Driftless Farm
During a recent Land Stewardship Project Grazing School, Jordan and Rachelle Meyer moved sheep on land they graze in southeastern Minnesota's Driftless Area. They design their paddocks to make best use of the forage and to control weeds such as thistles. Big thanks to grazier/beef producer Nikki Meyer for the great drone footage. More details on how to build soil health profitably via grazing is at landstewardshipproject.org/grazing-soil-health.

What they are doing is amazing, so this is not meant to take anything away from them. My guess is they are at up to 6%organic material. Which is amazingly good. To get to 6% organic matter (humus) from a 1.7 starting point would require about 700,000 lbs of organic material added to every acre over the years, which I deduce it’s been an 11 year endeavor. That’s 32 tons per year.

You can have healthy soil without animals but you have to have humans to “do the cow’s work” of cutting down cover crop, composting it, incorporating the compost... Livestock are just a cheat code! And the animals are happier and healthier than if they were in a CAFO so it’s really a no brainer.

I never knew how integral livestock were in soil health practices! Thanks for the video!

Good for you Wisconsin! California here - hard to find info about you because of media blackout. Just saw you on Ed Schultz (he's great but I think his NBC bosses are putting you guys on the back burner) after 45 min. about Japan. I feel deeply for Japan but after 3 hours on MSNBC it's time to hear about you. Stay strong! You are the real America! We're so proud!
